Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible for individuals with disabilities. Under Section 508, agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information. In response to innovations in technology, Section 508 was updated to include standards issued by the European Commission and with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0).
